Cedar Ridge Women’s Soccer

Jackson Schmid: The Division III Wheaton Thunder football team started its season with a 38-0 win over Monmouth (Illinois) at Zorn Stadium in Monmoth, IL on Saturday. Schmid, who was the quarterback for an undefeated Orange team in 2016, is now a safety with the Thunder. He recorded a career high two tackles on Saturday. Schmid, a junior, played three games for the Thunder last season.

Payton Wilson: N.C. State defeated Western Carolina 49-0 at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday. In his second college game, Wilson registered three tackles and a quarterback hit. He had six tackles in the season-opener against East Carolina last week.

Trent Gill: The 2017 Cedar Ridge graduate handled punting duties for N.C. State on Saturday. Gill had three punts for an 49.3 yard average. His longest punt was 58 yards, with two kicks inside the 20-yard line. Gill also had eight kickoffs with three touchbacks. The Wolfpack will take this week off, then return against Ball State on September 21.

Stone Edwards: After missing Vanderbilt’s season-opener against #3 Georgia on August 31st, the 2017 Orange graduate made his season-debut for the Commodores against Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, IN on Saturday. Edwards, who was listed as second-string defensive end on the Vanderbilt depth chart, wasn’t credited with a tackle. The Boilermakers defeated the Commodores 42-24.

Keshawn Thompson: The FCS Campbell Camels defeated Division II Shaw University 38-14 at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek on Saturday. Thompson was credited with two tackles. The Camels (1-1) return to action against Davidson on September 21.

Bryse Wilson: The day after making an appearance for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, Wilson returned to the Gwinnett Stripers of the AAA International League the next day. On Saturday, Wilson got the start as the Columbus Clippers defeated the Stripers 5-4 in Game 4 of the Governor’s Cup Semifinals at Huntington Park. The Clippers clinched the series three games to one and advanced to face the Durham Bulls in the Governor’s Cup Finals. Wilson went six innings in a no-decision. He surrendered ten hits and three runs. Gwinnett led 4-3 in the middle of the eighth, but couldn’t hold on to the lead. Gwinnett ends the season after a club record 81 wins. Wilson, who could return to Atlanta before the regular season ends, was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher for the Stripers last week. He finished 10-7 with a 3.42 in 21 starts for the Stripers this season. In his final ten starts, Wilson went 7-1 with a 3.12 ERA with 59 strikeouts and 13 walks.

Madison Wardlow: After graduating as Cedar Ridge’s career leading scorer in women’s basketball, Wardlow has enrolled at Guilford Technical Community College, where she plans to continue her basketball career. Wardlow was the first Cedar Ridge player to score over 1,000 points, a mark she eclipsed in February against Southern Durham.

Kayla Hodges: For the fifth time in five games, Hodges started for the Elon women’s soccer team in a 3-1 win over Richmond at President’s Field in Richmond, VA on Thursday. Hodges wasn’t credited with a shot on goal. The Phoenix are now 4-1 after going 3-10-4 in 2018.

Taylin Jean: The 2018 Cedar Ridge graduate made her college debut for Division II Limestone women’s soccer team on Thursday. North Georgia defeated the Saints 4-1 at the UNG Soccer Complex in Dahlonega, GA. Jean got her first college start in net and made three saves. Jean was the Big 8 Goalkeeper of the year her final two seasons at Cedar Ridge.

Brittany Daley: The Division III Greensboro College women’s soccer team won its third straight game over Southern Virginia 4-0 in Buena Vista, VA on Saturday. Daley, a 2018 Cedar Ridge graduate, started at centerback. She has started all four of the Pride’s games this year, playing 90 minutes twice. Greensboro is 3-1.

Jordan Rogers: On Saturday, Rogers started for Division III William Peace University. Agnes Scott defeated the Pacers 1-0 in Decatur, GA. The Pacers are 0-2 and will try to pick up its first win of 2019 against Hollins University at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary on Tuesday.

Lionel Reid-Shaw: The Division III Dickinson men’s soccer team suffered its first loss against Lebanon Valley 2-0 on Saturday in Annville, PA. Reid-Shaw entered the game as a reserve and has played in all three of Dickinson’s games so far this season. The Red Devils are 2-1.

Bailey Lucas: The Division III Meredith College volleyball team went 1-2 in the Washington & Lee Invite at the Duchossois Center in Lexington, VA on Friday and Saturday. The Avenging Angels defeated Southern Virginia 3-2 on Friday. Lucas had one kill, 17 assists and two digs against the Knights. On Saturday, Gettysburg defeated Meredith 3-2. Lucas finished with 19 assists and six digs. Washington & Lee also knocked off Meredith 3-2. Lucas had three kills, 18 assists, and four digs. The Avenging Angels are now 4-2.

After helping the Gwinnett Stripers win a franchise-record 81 games and the International League’s Southern Division championship, Bryse Wilson has been named the Stripers’ Most Outstanding Pitcher.

As Gwinnett honored Wilson, he was promoted to Atlanta on Monday. Wilson entered Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays and tossed a scoreless sixth inning. He ran into problems in the seventh as Rowdy Tellez launched a solo homer over the left field wall. Wilson went one-and-one-thirds innings, and allowed four hits and two earned runs.

The Braves defeated the Blue Jays 7-2 for its sixth straight win. Atlanta now leads the Washington Nationals by six-and-a-half games in the National League East.

Wilson started 2019 in Atlanta. His latest promotion is his fifth stint with the Braves this season and seventh since 2018.

In his final six starts for Gwinnett, Wilson threw 40 innings and had a 0.90 ERA. He struck out 37 while conceding 31 hits. Opponents hit only .217 against him. Wilson had six quality starts and went 6-0 in that span, helping the Stripers rally past the Durham Bulls in the standings for its second division championship since moving to Georgia from Richmond, VA in 2009.

Gwinnett will start play in the Governor’s Cup Playoffs against the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday. Game one of the best-of-five series will be in Coolray Field in Larenceville, GA.

Scott Satterfield: 1991 Orange High graduate Scott Satterfield made his head coaching debut with the Louisville Cardinals on Monday night. #8 Notre Dame pulled away from the Cardinals 35-17 in Cardinals Stadium. It was Satterfield’s first game after five seasons at his alma mater, Appalachian State. In Boone, Satterfield led the Mountaineers to three consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships in its transition from the Southern Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Satterfield was a quarterback at Orange and also played safety. In his high school career, the only varsity year he was healthy was 1990, when Orange went 7-3. Satterfield tore his ACL int he season-opener of the 1989 season at Eastern Alamance.

Satterfield went on to become an FCS (then I-AA) All-American at Appalachian State. As fate would have it, the top tailback on his offense was 1993 Orange graduate Damon Scott, who would also become an FCS All-American. Together, the two helped Appalachian win the 1995 Southern Conference Championship, beating a Marshall team that included future NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss.

Satterfield also was the offensive coordinator at Florida International and quarterbacks coach at Toledo before returning to Boone, where he succeeded his mentor Jerry Moore as head coach.

Louisville hosts FCS Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night.

Kayla Hodges: The Elon women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday. Furman defeated Elon 3-0 at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, SC. Hodges started at midfield, as she has all of the Phoenix’s games so far this season. Elon is 3-1 and travels to Richmond on Thursday.

Brittany Daley: The 2018 Cedar Ridge graduate made another start for the Division III Greensboro College women’s soccer team on Sunday. The Pride defeated Bob Jones University 5-1 in Greenville, S.C. Greensboro is 2-1 and faces Southern Virginia University on Saturday.

Payton Wilson: The former Big 8 Player of the Year made his long-awaited debut for N.C. State in its season-opener against East Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh on Saturday. Wilson made six tackles, including two tackles for loss, in his first college game as the Wolfpack hammered the Pirates 34-6. Wilson was part of a stout Wolfpack defense that kept the Pirates out of the end zone. ECU was held to 41 rushing yards and 269 yards total offense. East Carolina didn’t cross the 50-yard line for eight consecutive drives. The Pirates didn’t snap the ball in Wolfpack territory at all in the second half until a meaningless final drive that ended with a field goal. Wilson, a redshirt freshman, will return to action against Western Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Trent Gill: The 2017 Cedar Ridge graduate also made his college football debut for N.C. State in the victory over East Carolina. Gill delivered the opening kickoff to the Wolfpack’s season, He also had five punts for an average of 41.6 yards. His longest kick was 53 yards. As placekicker, he had two touchbacks. As a punter, he downed two punts inside the 20-yard line.

Keshawn Thompson: A 2017 Orange High graduate, Thompson played extensively in for FCS Campbell in its 43-14 loss to Troy at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, AL on Saturday night. Thompson made five tackles against the Trojans. Thompson, who was placed on scholarship during the summer, was named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll last year. In 2018, he played in all eleven of Campbell’s games. The Camels will host Division II Shaw in Buies Creek next Saturday.

Kayla Hodges: On Friday night, Hodges notched her first college assist. Not only that, but she assisted on the game-winning goal as Elon defeated Radford 2-1 at Cupp Stadium in Virginia. Off a corner kick, Hodges headed the ball to Taylor Paradoski, who fired it into the net from four yards out in the 67th minute. Elon is 3-0, already equaling its win total from 2018. Hodges has started all three games. Elon travels to Furman on Sunday afternoon.

Brittany Daley: After going undefeated during the regular season in 2018, the Division III Greensboro women’s soccer team dropped its opener to Washington & Lee 2-0 in the Washington & Lee Tournament in Lexington, VA on Friday. Daley, a 2018 Cedar Ridge graduate, started for the Pride. On Saturday, Greensboro rebounded with a 2-1 win over Bridgestone College in the consolation game. Daley also started that game at centerback.

Jordan Rogers: A 2018 Orange graduate, Rogers started her sophomore season with Division III William Peace University’s women’s soccer team on Friday night. St. Andrews defeated the Pacers 2-1 in Laurinburg. Rogers started at midfield.

Lionel Reid-Shaw: The Division III Dickinson’s men’s soccer team started its season with two wins. Reid-Shaw, a senior who graduated from Orange, started in a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer at Miller Memorial Field in Carlisle, PA on Saturday night. Reid-Shaw started at wingback. He also played in Dickinson’s 6-3 victory over Plattsburgh on Friday.

Lili Henry: The Division III Methodist volleyball team started its season in the Oregon Trail Volleyball Tournament in Newberg, OR. The Monarchs dropped all four of its matches against Linfield College and George Fox University on Friday. On Saturday, Pacific University and Lewis & Clark College defeated Methodist. In the 3-0 loss to Linfield, Henry led Methodist with 18 assists and three aces. She also had three kills. Against George Fox, Henry had 22 assists, four digs and a block. In Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Pacific University, Henry registered 24 assists, three kills, and five digs. The finale against Lewis & Clark, a 3-0 loss, featured Henry with 26 assists and seven digs.

Bailey Lucas: Lucas started her sophomore year as a member of the Division III Meredith Volleyball team with three wins and a loss at the Route 42 Classic this weekend. On Friday, the Avenging Angels defeated Catholic 3-0 and fought back to defeat Eastern Mennonite 3-2 in Yoder Arena in Harrisonburg, VA on Friday. Meredith defeated Lynchburg 3-1 before falling to Bridgewater 3-0 on Saturday.

Lucas didn’t play on Friday, but did see action against Lynchburg. Lucas had two kills, 16 assists and three digs. She also played all three sets against Bridgewater, where she registered one kill, seven digs, one dig and one block.

Payton Wilson: After being on the sidelines for nearly two years, Wilson is expected to make his college debut on Saturday when N.C. State faces East Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. On Monday, Wilson was listed as a backup as a weak side linebacker junior Louis Acceus. Wilson will likely share time with redshirt junior Brock Miller. Wilson was the 2017 Big 8 Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead Orange to three consecutive Big 8 Championships, including an undefeated regular season in 2016. Wilson also played quarterback, wide receiver, and punter for Orange under head coaches Pat Moser and Van Smith. Wilson is a redshirt freshman who missed last season after tearing his ACL during spring practice in March 2018. He originally injured the knee against Cedar Ridge on the opening kickoff between the two teams on October 27, 2017.

Stone Edwards: Edwards, who graduated from Orange in 2016, is listed as a second-string defensive end for Vanderbilt going into its season-opener against #3 Georgia at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville on Saturday. Edwards, a redshirt sophomore who majors in Psychology, is behind junior Dayo Odeyingbo on the two-deep. In 2018, Edwards made his college debut as a redshirt freshman. He played 12 games and compiled seven tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack. Edwards was also part of Orange’s 2017 season that went undefeated in the regular season and only allowed three offensive touchdowns the entire season.

Adam Chnupa: The 2018 Cedar Ridge graduate will be in uniform for the first time this weekend when FCS Elon takes on North Carolina A&T at BB&T Stadium in Greensboro on Saturday. Chnupa is a redshirt freshman for the Phoenix. North Carolina A&T is #20 in the preseason FCS poll and has won three of the last four HBCU National Championships. Elon is #21 in the preseason FCS poll.

Bryse Wilson: It was another strong performance for Wilson for the AAA International League’s Gwinnett Stripers on Tuesday night. Wilson earned his sixth straight win as the Stripers defeated the Norfolk Tides 8-2 at Coolray Field in Gwinnett County, GA. Wilson tossed seven innings, striking out nine. He surrendered nine hits and two runs in his sixth consecutive quality start. Wilson is now 10-7 with a 3.42 ERA. He hasn’t lost since July 21. With the win, along with the Durham Bulls’ victory over the Charlotte Kngihts, Gwinnett clinched a berth in the Governor’s Cup Playoffs. Major League Baseball rosters expand on Sunday. If Wilson is recalled by Atlanta, it will be his fifth stint with the Braves this season.

Kayla Hodges: For the second straight game, Wilson started as a midfielder for the Elon women’s soccer team against High Point at Rudd Field in Elon on Sunday. The Phoenix claimed its second straight win to open the season, 1-0 over the Panthers. Wilson fired one shot. Charlotte-native Carson Jones scored the game’s only goal. Elon will return to action with a road trip to Radford on Thursday. If Elon wins this weekend, they will have already matched its win total from all of 2018.

Chandler Compton: As mentioned last week, Compton plays as a wingback for the Wofford men’s soccer team. The Terriers starts its 2019 season at Houston Baptist on Friday night.

Kayla Hodges: In her season-debut for the Elon women’s soccer team on Thursday night, the 2018 Orange High graduate started as the Phoenix defeated Canisus 1-0 in overtime at Rudd Field in Elon. Freshman Bethany Harford scored the game’s only goal. In 2018, Hodges appeared in seven matches. She made her college debut on August 19, 2018 against UNC Wilmington, playing 18 minutes. Hodges was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll at the end of the season. Elon returns to action with a home game against High Point on Sunday. Earlier this week, Hodges cousin continued to make his presence felt on the baseball diamond…

Bryse Wilson: After returning to the Gwinnett Stripers of the AAA International League on Monday from Atlanta, Wilson collected his fifth straight win with a 6-2 decision over the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. Wilson threw six innings and surrendered four hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. He now leads the International League in wins (5) and ERA (0.55) in his last five starts. Since July 21, teams are hitting only .190 against Wilson. The Stripers currently lead the Charlotte Knights by one-and-a-half games for first place in the International League’s Southern Division. The Stripers are looking for its 2nd division championship since leaving Richmond, VA for Georgia in 2009. Gwinnett will journey to Durham for a weekend series against the Bulls starting Friday, but Wilson isn’t expected to see action.

Jonathan Hall: A 2016 Cedar Ridge graduate, Hall is now with the Wofford men’s track and field team. Last season during the Terrier’s indoor season, Hall competed in four meets. He set personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles at the VMI Winter Relays and added a personal best in the 400 meters at the East Tennessee State Track & Field Invitational. In the 2018 outdoor season, Hall ran six meets. At the Southern Conference Championships, Hall was 10th in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best of 15.25 seconds. He added a personal best in the 400 meter hurdles at the ETSU Tri Star Classic. In 2017, Hall was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in the 400 meters. Hall was a three-year letterman for the Cedar Ridge football team as a wide receiver under Coach Scott Loosemore.

Hunter March: Last spring, March completed his freshman season for the Division III UNC Pembroke track and field team. March competed the decathlon, where he amassed 3,720 points. That included a personal best of 11.54 seconds in the 100 meter dash; 56.70 seconds in the 200 meter dash; and 18.38 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles. March also had a leap of 5.50 meters in the long jump and 1.51 meters in the high jump. At Cedar Ridge, March qualified for the 3A Mideast Regionals in the 110 meter hurdles, pole vault, the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. He also played for the Cedar Ridge men’s soccer team under head coach Chris Walker and football for three years under Loosemore. As of his autumns at Cedar Ridge weren’t busy enough, March also participated in the marching band. He now majors at Computer Science at Pembroke. He starts his sophomore year next week.

Cedar Ridge senior centerback Geri Messinger asked head coach P.J. Michaelson to move up to midfield in the midst of the first half of the Red Wolves 7-0 win over Orange on Wednesday night. She got the opportunity and turned it into a goal as the Red Wolves completed a season sweep of the Lady Panthers. Messinger is winding down her Cedar Ridge career. She aims to push the Red Wolves into the state playoffs for the second year in a row. Last year, Cedar Ridge won a state playoff game at West Carteret. Emmy Talley scored a hat trick for the Red Wolves against the Lady Panthers. Cedar Ridge will travel to Northern Durham on Monday night.

Cedar Ridge junior Giselle Solis Morales assisted on three goals as the Red Wolves women’s soccer team defeated crosstown rival Orange 7-0 on Wednesday night. With the win, Cedar Ridge completed a season sweep of the Lady Panthers. Solis Morales had three assists in Cedar RIdge’s 5-0 win over Orange on March 25 at Orange Soccer Park. This season, Solis Morales has two goals and ten points. Cedar Ridge followed the Orange win with a 7-2 win at Southern Durham on Thursday night. The Red Wolves are now 6-7-1 overall, 4-5 in the Big 8 Conference.

This week’s Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week is sophomore striker Emmy Talley. On March 25, Talley scored a hat trick in a 5-0 win over crosstown rival Orange. It was her second hat trick of the season. On March 28, Talley followed with her 3rd hat trick of the season in a 9-0 win over River Mill Academy. Talley also had two assists in the win over the Jaguars. Talley scored two goals in Cedar Ridge’s 9-0 win over Hillside on March 12. After helping Cedar Ridge win a state playoff game last year over West Carteret, Talley is the leading scorer for the Red Wolves this season. Cedar Ridge will host Orange on Wednesday.

On Monday night, the Cedar Ridge women’s soccer team defeated Orange 5-0 at Orange High Soccer Park. Junior midfielder Giselle Solis Morales assisted on three goals in the first half, all of which were scored by striker Emmy Talley. In the 9th minute, Morales snuck a gorgeous through ball to Talley, who blasted it home from 15 yards for the opening goal. Talley notched her 2nd goal with 28:17 remaining in the first half off another assist from Morales. In the 2nd half, Morales assisted on two balls that turned into penalty kicks. Both penalties were attempted by goalkeeper Grace Davies, who scored on her 2nd try. Cedar Ridge improve to 2-3 in the Big 8 Conference with the victory. On Thursday night, Morales helped Cedar Ridge defeat River Mill Academy to improve to 4-5-1 on the season.

This was one trip away from Morehead City that P.J. Michaelson could enjoy.

As a player at South Central High in Winterville, Michaelson was 0-8 against Coastal Conference rival West Carteret.

He also managed the girls team for four years. They never defeated the Patriots, either.

“I used to dread going there,” said Michaelson.

So when the NCHSAA announced the girls soccer playoff brackets on Monday morning, Michaelson had a case of deja vu. Cedar Ridge, the team he has coached for the past five years, would travel to face, you guessed it, West Carteret.

But Michaelson didn’t feel dread. He got a jolt of optimism.

“I told the girls we were prepared,” said Michaelson. “Their 11-seed was just a number. It doesn’t matter what their rank is. We’re ready to go.”

On Wednesday night, his players proved him right.

Freshmen Emerson Talley and Ivy Garner each scored goals in the first half, while Geri Messinger scored in the 2nd to finally give Michaelson his long-awaited win at West Carteret 3-0 in the first round of the 3A State Playoffs.

Not only did the Red Wolves advance to the 2nd round to face D.H. Conley on Saturday, they also became the first team to shut out the Patriots this season. West Carteret, the 11th seed, finished runner-up in the Coastal Conference behind Jacksonville.

It was Cedar Ridge’s first win in the state playoffs since 2005, when the Red Wolves defeated Durham School of the Arts 3-1 in the 2A/1A state championship tournament (the NCHSAA crowned three state champions in women’s soccer in those days).

Senior Taylin Jean and junior Grace Davies shared goalkeeping duties. Jean played in the first half, then moved to right cornerback in the second half as Michaelson shifted formations. Starting in a 4-4-2, Michaelson adjusted to a 3-5-2 and finished with a 4-5-1.

“I was shocked because I didn’t think it would work so well,” said Michaelson. “The backline kept them in front of them so they couldn’t use their speed. We played perfectly.”

Talley and Garner assisted on each other’s goals. Garner, who was All-Big 8 in women’s tennis, leads the team with 18 goals. Talley has 15 goals and 14 assists.

Messinger notched her third goal as Cedar Ridge improved to 11-3-5.

The win was gratifying for Jean, a senior who had been to the state playoffs the past two years only to come away with first-round losses. Last year, Cedar Ridge lost a 2-1 heart breaker to West Brunswick with the game-winning goal coming in the last ten minutes. It made for a long four-and-a-half hour bus ride back from Shallotte.

“Without that loss, we wouldn’t have won tonight,” said Jean. “It really helped us. It motivated us. We really wanted to win tonight. It definitely feels good to win this one. Not winning in the playoffs had definitely been bugging me the last couple of years.”

The bus ride home for Cedar Ridge on Wednesday night was four hours. Michaelson started the day at 6:30 AM and didn’t get home until midnight. He had another day of school ahead Thursday, but he was too happy to care.

“I’m going to stay up all night just like I did in college,” said Michaelson.
