After years as Cedar Ridge offensive line coach, Noah Powers now has his first victory as a women’s tennis head coach.
Powers, who replaced Al Caltabiano as head coach over the summer after three years as a football assistant coach, earned the win after Cedar Ridge defeated Eno River 6-3 on Tuesday at Red Wolves Tennis Courts.
Cedar Rider senior Jasmin Brown picked up two wins. Brown endured a number of games that were extended to deuce to defeat Clara Sanford 6-2, 6-2. In the top doubles match, Brown teamed with Lydia Bordelon to hold off Sanford and Meg Brinkman 8-6.
Eno River’s Dahlia Kisala earned two of the Bobcats three victories on the day. She defeated Bordelon 6-1, 6-0 in the #2 singles match. Later, she teamed with Sadie Davies-Payne to defeated Madison Galindo-Woodring and Phoebe Lund 8-4 in the #2 doubles match.
Galindo-Woodring defeated Davies-Payne 7-5, 6-1 in the #3 singles match. The most competitive match of the day came at #4 singles where Cedar Ridge’s Lucinda Smylie defeated Brinkman 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in a 10-point tiebreaker.
Cedar Ridge’s Phoebe Lund won over Gia Morgan 6-4, 6-4. At #6 singles, Ivaree Eads defeated Natalie Harkins 6-0, 7-5.
The Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches. Natalie Harkins and Lyle York defeated Smylie and Eads 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 7-3. Harkins and York were down by three games at one point but earned the victory.
The Red Wolves faced a brutal opening slate to start the season. They opened with Carrboro, the defending 4A State Champions, in its Big 7 Conference opener. They also faced Seaforth and had two matches against Western Alamance. Cedar Ridge is now 1-4.
Eno River is now 2-1. They will travel to Siler City to face Chatham Charter on Thursday. The Bobcats will open Triangle North Conference action against Henderson Collegiate at Fairview Park in Hillsborough on Monday.
