Orange’s annual visit to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary resulted in a freshman earning his first brace.
Samuel Wilking scored both goals for the Panthers in a 2-all tie against First Flight at the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Select Kickoff Classic on Friday afternoon. This year’s event brought together 170 teams for 85 matches that took place across nine fields at the complex.
Wilking’s two goals were the first of his varsity career. The Panthers, coming off its first win of the season at Eastern Alamance last Monday, is now 1-1-1 under first year head coach Jose Hidalgo.
First Flight, which made an eight-hour bus trip from Kill Devil Hills for the game, scored a goal in the first and second half in its first tie of the year. The Nighthawks won its season-opener at Catholic High 4-0.
Orange will return to action at Riverside inside Linny Wrenn Stadium in Durham on Wednesday night. They will travel to Hillside on Friday, its fourth consecutive match outside of Hillsborough.
Women’s Tennis: Western Alamance 6, Cedar Ridge 3: Cedar Ridge senior Madeline Galindo-Woodring earned two wins as the Red Wolves suffered its second loss to the Warriors in as many weeks. On Thursday in Elon, Morgan Cook and Meegan Ward each earned two wins for the Warriors to improve to 3-0.
Galindo-Woodring, an All-Big 7 Conference performer in softball, won her #3 singles match over Fiona Dang 6-2, 6-0. Later, Galindo-Woodring would team with Jasmin Brown to win the top doubles match over Abigail Stimpson and Dang 8-3.
In the #2 singles match, Cedar Ridge’s Lydia Bordelon defeated Stimpson 6-2, 6-1.
Two of the singles matches wound up going to third-set, 10-point tiebreakers. At #1 singles, Western Alamance senior Camden Markey defeated Jasmin Brown 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Cook defeated Lucinda Smylie at #4 singles 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
Cook also teamed with Weaver to win the #2 doubles match over Bordelon and Phoebe Lund 8-1.
Cedar Ridge is 0-4. On Tuesday, the Red Wolves will host Eno River Academy at Red Wolf Tennis Courts.
