Even after the loss of four senior staters, the Orange women’s tennis team has started the season 3-0.
On Wednesday, the Lady Panthers defeated Triangle Math and Science Academy 7-2 in its home opener at Panther Tennis Courts in Hillsborough.
Senior Ellie Wilson improved to 2-0 on the season after winning her #2 singles match 6-0, 6-0, which became a trend. Lucy Frank, the only other senior on the team, won two matches on the day. Frank won her #4 singles match without losing a game. Later in the day, Frank teamed with Emery Kruse to win the #3 doubles match 8-0.
Junior Davia Coyle also won two matches in an impressive opening week as a new starter. Coyle won her #3 singles match 6-1, 6-1. She joined Cadence Sayed to win at #2 doubles 8-0.
Kruse earned a victory at #5 singles. She won 6-0, 6-0, in a addition to her doubles win with Frank.
Junior Carolina Sales, the twin sister of Cadence Sayed, won at #5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
Triangle Math and Science Academy’s only win came at #1 singles, where Sasha Korjova defeated Orange’s Kalynn Mason 6-2, 6-0.
Korjova factored in on both Triangle Math victories. She teamed with Emily Singh to defeat Wilson and Mason 8-5.
On Thursday, Orange defeated Southern Alamance 9-0 in Graham.
The Lady Panthers will return to action against Voyage Academy on Monday in Hillsborough, which will be the start of a three-match home stand. On Tuesday, Orange will host Northwood, then face Carrboro in its Big 7 Conference opener on Wednesday.
Women’s Tennis: Carrboro 6, Cedar Ridge 0:
Cedar Ridge had its first match against the defending 4A State Champions in Hillsborough on Tuesday. It was Cedar Ridge’s first match under new head coach Noah Powers, a former offensive line coach for the Red Wolf football team. It was also the Big 7 Conference opener for the Red Wolves. Bea Unwin, Clair O’Brien, Eva Noar, MacKenzie Birrenkott, Bailey Birrenkott and Ellie Nicholas all earned singles wins for the Jaguars. Doubles play didn’t take place because of the threat of severe weather.
Western Alamance 7, Cedar Ridge 2:
Cedar Ridge senior Jasmin Brown earned the Red Wolves first win of the season in a marathon. Brown, who led the Red Wolves in wins last year, won her #1 singles match over Camden Markey 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 in a three-set tiebreaker on Thursday in Elon.
Sophomore Lydia Bordelon won the #2 singles match for the Red Wolves. Bordelon defeated Abigail Stimpson 6-1, 6-3 to put the Red Wolves ahead 2-0.
Western Alamance, a former Central Conference rival of the Red Wolves, won the other seven matches to win its season-opener. The Warriors’ Fiona Dang, Meggan Weaver, Rebekah Cuevas and Summer Kernodle won singles matches.
In doubles matches, Camden Markey and Abigail Simpson won at #1 doubles. Morgan Cook and Dang won at #2 doubles. At #3 doubles, Cuevas and Weaver defeated Phoebe Lund and Laura Fisher 8-2.
Cedar Ridge will continue a difficult start to the season with a road trip to Seaforth on Monday.
Men’s Soccer: Walter Williams 6, Orange 1:
In the first game for new Orange men’s soccer coach Jose Hidalgo, the Williams Bulldogs got a hat trick from sophomore Dawson Tanner to defeat the Panthers in Hillsborough.
Williams charged out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and didn’t look back. Hidalgo, who scored ten goals as a freshman, scored the game-winner as the Bulldogs won its season-opener. Freshman Landyn Tribout, sophomore Landon Krist, and senior Jack Dooley also scored goals for the Bulldogs.
Krist added two assists. Yamil Aviles and Sebastian Vargas Aleem also added assists.
The only Orange goal came from freshman Daniel Tapia Mendez, the younger brother of Yurim Tapia Mendez, who graduated in June after leading the Panthers in scoring last year. Brendan McDonald assisted in Mendez’s first varsity goal.
Orange will travel to Eastern Alamance on Monday.
Graham 4, Eno River Academy 0:
The Bobcats dropped its season-opener at Soccer.com Complex in Efland on Friday night. Graham got two goals from Derrick Burgos Bangeas. Iann Maya and Haydon Umana added goals for the Red Devils.
Abdiel Diaz earned the clean sheet at the Red Devils’ goalkeeper.
