Need for Speed; Orange’s Fearrington wins 100 meter dash at Orange County Track Championships; Jermyn takes 1,600 & 3,200 meters

Orange junior Kaleeya Fearrington now has the title of the fastest woman in Orange County.

At the Orange County Track & Field Championships, Fearrington had a near photo finish at Culton-Peerman Stadium inside Chapel Hill High School on Saturday. In the end, Fearrington beat out East Chapel Hill’s Elia Toledo by two-hundredths-of-a-second, finishing at 12.86 seconds.

Fearrington’s teammate, Asia Whitsett, finished at 12.89 seconds in a tight battle.

In the women’s field events, it was another strong day for Cedar Ridge freshman Michelle Pringley. Just a week after winning the discuss and the shot put in a meet at Carrboro High, Pringley took the discuss with ease. Her top throw of 110-feet, 9-inches was well beyond the top throw of runner-up Scarlett Gilner, who finished at 104-feet, 3-inches.

Pringley came in second in the shot put at 35-feet, one-inch. Chapel Hill’s Aleah Wright edged Pringley with a top throw of 36-feet, ten-inches.

Just days after committing to run for Duke University, Orange senior Myles Jermyn earned a spot in regionals with two first-place finishes in the men’s track events.

Jermyn won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, again facing strong competition from his teammates. In the 1,600 meters, Jermyn outpaced East Chapel Hill’s Gianluca Vavalle with a time of 4:21.95. Vavalle crossed the finish line at 4:25.01. Grant Schmid Jr. of Orange finished third at 4:27.69.

Schmid, who qualified for the 5A North Carolina High School Indoor State Track and Field Championships in February, also finished second in the 800 meters at 2:02.44. Carrboro’s Benjamin Horton finished first at 2:00.83.

In the 3,200 meters, Jermyn battled his own teammate and classmate Lucas Van Mater to the finish line. Jermyn finished at 9:57.94, while Van Mater came in second at 9:58.63. Cedar Ridge senior Henry Alexander came in third at 10:08.48.

Jermyn, Van Mater and Schmid teamed to win the 800 meter relay with a time of 8:23.54. Cedar Ridge’s team of John Ngunjiri, Whitaker, Reece Finnegan and Landon Tillett finished second at 8:26.04.

In the field events, Cedar Ridge junior Landon Walker earned the win in the shot put. Walker, a three-sport athlete that is being recruited by several colleges as a defensive lineman, finished first with a top throw of 43-feet, two-inches. Maxwell Seingler of Chapel Hill finished second at 40-feet.

Walker was also a grappler for the Big 7 Conference Champion Cedar Ridge wrestling team last winter.

Kazden Lute finished 2nd in the discuss at 118-feet, 6-inches. Jacques Huin of Chapel Hill came in first at 121-feet, 8-inches.

Cedar Ridge junior Jaiden Lytle third place finishes. In the long jump, Lytle finished at 19-feet, 11.50-inches. East Chapel Hill’s Roland Craddock registered a first place finish with a leap of 20-feet, six-inches.

In the triple jump, Lytle finished third at 39-feet, 7.50-inches. Yichen Zhao of Chapel Hill finished first at 41-feet, 0.75-inches.

In the high jump, Cedar Ridge freshman Efran Akbar finished second at 5-feet, six-inches. Chapel Hill sophomore Dominic Miller edged out Akbar for first at 5-feet, 8-inches.

Orange sophomore Jakai Torain finished third in the 100 meter dash at 11.68 seconds. Dominic Miller of Chapel Hill took the sprint at 11.23 seconds, while Carrboro’s Liam Brown came in second at 11.52 seconds.

Also in field events, Orange’s Kierstyn Pate finished first at seven-feet.

The Orange women also controlled the distance running events. Sophomore Reilly Jermyn, the younger sister of Myles, captured the 1,600 meters at 5:18.02. Jermyn’s teammate, Ava Bishop, finished second at 5:25.17, while Chapel Hill’s Sadie Mersereau came in third at 5:26.30.

Bishop won the 3,200 meters at 12:05.39, holding off Carrboro’s Alora Honeycutt (12:16.55). Orange freshman Magnolia Bolduc finished third at 12:52.74.

Jermyn and Bishop were two of the top runners for the Orange women’s cross country team that won the Big 7 Conference championship last fall in Durham.

Jermyn also finished 2nd in the women’s 800 meters at 2:23.21. East Chapel Hill’s Ava Maughan took the top spot at 2:16.40.

Orange freshman Mia Albright, who frequently started during basketball season, won the women’s 300 meter hurdles at 52.56 seconds.
