Alumni Update: George continues strong start for Guilford women’s basketball

Evelyn George: The Division III Guilford College women’s basketball team is 7-0 for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. George, who graduated in June, scored ten points as the Quakers defeated Eastern Mennonite 71-60 at Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse in Greensboro on Saturday. George also registered three rebounds as the Quakers improved to 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. On December 3, Guilford won its conference opener over Roanoke College 63-60. George finished with four points and three rebounds over 15 minutes. Against Greensboro College on December 1, George had 12 points as Guilford defeated the Pride 104-56 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. George had the first double-double of her college career with 12 rebounds, along with three steals. George has already assumed the sixth lady role for Guilford, who will face Pfeiffer in Greensboro on Thursday. Through the first seven games of her college career, George is averaging 8.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. She’s averaging 16.9 minutes per game. George played four seasons at Orange. Last season, she helped the Lady Panthers defeat Swansboro for its first state playoff win since 2017.

Amiyah Ware: Division II North Greenville defeated Valkyries 84-66 at Hayes Gymnasium in Tigerville, SC on December 3. Ware came off the bench to score 16 points in 22 minutes off 4-of-8 shooting from the field. She also hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range and grabbed three rebounds as the Trailblazers improved to 4-4 overall, 1-1 in Conference Carolinas. On Saturday, Emmanuel defeated North Greenville 57-53. Ware led North Greenville with 15 points off 5-of-15 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers. Ware also grabbed four rebounds. Through the opening nine games of the year, Ware is the leading scorer for North Greenville with 12.3 points per game. She also leads the team with 21 3-pointers. North Greenville will host Mount Olive on Saturday.

Payton Wilson: The Pittsburgh Steelers claimed a wild win over the Baltimore Ravens 27-22 to remain atop the AFC Central Division at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Sunday. Wilson registered six tackles, four solo, as the Steelers improved to 7-6. Going into the Baltimore matchup, Wilson was tied for fourth on the team with 59 solo tackles. Through the first 12 games, Wilson had 109 combined tackles. The NFL also fined Wilson $14,132 for unnecessary roughness on two tackles in Pittsburgh’s loss to Buffalo on November 30.

Bryse Wilson: It appears that Wilson will spend only one season with the Chicago White Sox. On October 1, Wilson opted for free agency. Last season, Wilson made 20 appearances for the White Sox, including five starts. He finished with a 6.65 ERA with over 47 innings. Chicago designated Wilson for assignment in June and spent part of the year with the Charlotte Knights of the International League. Wilson signed with the White Sox last winter after leaving the Milwaukee Brewers. It was his eighth Major League season.

Katie Belle Sikes: The Georgia Bulldogs women’s swimming team has finished the fall season. On November 21, Georgia finished fourth in the Georgia Fall Invitational at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Sikes, the first female state champion swimmer in Orange High history, competed in the 400 freestyle relay with fellow sophomore Marie Landreneau, Emma Norton and Ieva Maluka. They finished third with a season-best 3:14.93. In the 100 yard freestyle, Sikes won the consolation final with a season-best time of 48.74 seconds. Georgia will continue its season on January 10 with a dual meet against Florida State.

Sophia Stinnett: The former Cedar Ridge Red Wolf is in her first season on the Division I Le Moyne swimming team. On November 22, Stinnett swam in the 400 yard freestyle relay during the Magnus Cup, hosted by Cleveland State University. Stinnett was joined on the relay team by Brooke Sommo, Kayla Fraley and Kayleigh Bigwarfe to finish in 19th place with a time of 3:38.56. In a dual meet against Colgate in Syracuse, NY on November 7, Stinnett finished in first place in the 1000 yard freestyle at 11:05.01. Colgate won the dual match 162-80.
