Payton Wilson: Beginning his second season in the National Football League, Wilson started at linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on Sunday. Wilson had five tackles, including one for a loss, as the Steelers rallied to defeat New York 34-32. Wilson also had a quarterback hurry. On Sunday, the Steelers will face the Seattle Seahawks at Acrisure Stadium.
Darius Satterfield: The Division II Elizabeth City State Vikings dropped its opening two games. The Vikings lost to Chowan 28-14 in the opener at Murfreesboro. Satterfield, a former punter at Orange, punted four times for ECSU. His longest was 51 yards. He had an average of 41.2 yards. One punt was downed inside the 20-yard line. Last Saturday, Hampton, an FCS team, held off the Vikings 27-20 at Armstrong Field in Hampton, VA. Satterfield punted three times with an average of 38.7 yards. One was downed inside the 20-yard line. His longest punt was 39 yards. The Vikings will face Johnson C. Smith, ranked #23 in Division II, in its CIAA opener in Elizabeth City State on Saturday.
Bryse Wilson: After spending most of the summer with the Charlotte Knights of the International League, Wilson was recalled by the Chicago White Sox for an appearance on September 2. Throwing against the Minnesota Twins, Wilson threw two scoreless innings, retiring each of the six batters he faced. It was Wilson’s first Major League appearance since June 8. Despite the solid showing, Wilson was outrighted back to Charlotte on Sunday. This season with Charlotte, Wilson has gone 4-2 with a 3.79 ERA. In 40 innings with Charlotte, Wilson has 38 strikeouts with eight walks. Next week, Charlotte will wrap up its season with a six-game series against the Durham Bulls.
Ivy Garner: For the first time in her college career, Garner had a hat trick for the Liberty Flames women’s soccer team. Garner scored three goals in a 4-0 win over UNC Greensboro at Osborne Stadium in Lynchburg, VA. Garner is now tied for second in team history with 24 goals with Gabrielle Farrell (2016-2019) and Amy Oberlin (2005-2008). Garner scored the opening goal in the 20th minute off an assist from Carly Keene. She added goals in the 56th and 57th minutes. Liberty is off to a 5-2-2 start. Garner also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion on August 31 at ODU Sports Complex in Norfolk, VA. Garner scored the game’s only goal in the 86th minute.
Katie Paulakonis: Playing for Bellarmine University, Paulakonis came off the bench to play 35 minutes in the Knights 2-1 in over Wright State at Alumni Field in Dayton, OH.
Cameron Lanier: The Elon volleyball team started play in the Clemson-Wofford Tournament at Jersey Gymnasium in Clemson on Thursday. Clemson swept the Phoenix in the opening game. Once again, Lanier led the team with eight kills. She also had two digs.
Cameron Lloyd: On Tuesday, #12 Penn State swept Bucknell at Rec Hall in State College, PA. Lloyd, who has moved to libero, finished with seven digs and one ace. Bucknell is 3-5 overall and will play in the Binghamton Invitational at the Events Center in Vestal, NY this weekend.
Ella Wimsatt: Last Friday, Wimsatt made her season-debut for Division II Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Bears defeated Lees-McRae 3-0 at Shuford Memorial Coliseum in Hickory. Wimsatt had one dig in her only set of action. This weekend, the Bears are in St. Augustine, FL for the Flager Saints Classic.
Melissa Benkowitz: The Division III Franklin & Marshall College volleyball team is now 7-0. The Diplomats defeated the DeSales Bulldogs at Billera Hall in Center Valley, PA on Wednesday. Benkowitz finished with eight kills and eight digs.
Abby Silinski: Also playing for Franklin & Marshall, the former Orange High libero came in for one set and got a dig in the win over DeSales.
Allie Wilkerson: On Wednesday, the Division III Averett volleyball team started its Old Dominion Athletic Conference slate. Guilford defeated Averett 3-1 at Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro. Wilkerson, the older sister of Orange senior Ava Wilkerson, finished with eight kills and eight digs over four sets. The Cougars are now 2-7 and will face Randolph-Macon and #24 Virginia Wesleyan University this weekend in ODAC Conference action.
