There’s no place like home, a place that the Cedar Ridge volleyball team hasn’t seen very much of so far on this young season.
In its first home match since classes resumed last week, the Red Wolves put away Southern Durham 3-0 on scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-6 on Monday night.
The Red Wolves, who rebounded from last Tuesday’s loss at Seaforth by sweeping Western Alamance in Elon on Wednesday, improved to 7-1 overall with its second win over the Spartans this season.
Southern Durham fell to 3-3.
The Red Wolves never trailed in the match. There were only four ties. Cedar Ridge served up seven aces in the opening set with sophomore libero Nora Stoll and sophomore outside hitter Avery Owens each recording two. Senior Addilyn Jackson had four kills in the opening set. Jackson recorded ten kills overall.
Freshman Florence Mwanza had a kill for the 24th point in the opening set. The Spartans were called for touching the net on set point.
Stoll finished with nine digs.
Cedar Ridge sophomore outside hitter Dani Solomon paced the Red Wolves with eleven kills. Jackson opened the second set with a kill assisted by junior Solana Gutierrez-Quintero. Cedar Ridge jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set following a kill by Reese Smith.
Gutierrez-Quintero finished with 20 assists. Kaitlyn Dixon had eight assists.
Gutierrez-Quintero started the third set with an ace as the Red Wolves went on a 9-1 run to start the frame. Solomon had a block and a kill on consecutive points. Stoll had three aces in the third set. Solomon ended the match with back-to-back aces.
It was the first of three matches in four days for the Red Wolves. Cedar Ridge will host J.F. Webb in a Big7 Conference match on Tuesday in Hillsborough. On Thursday, Cedar Ridge will travel to Carrboro. Last year, the Jaguars handed the Red Wolves its only loss of the regular season at Jaguars Gymnasium.
