August ended in style for the Cedar Ridge women’s tennis team.
The Red Wolves swept the doubles matches to defeat Durham School of the Arts 6-3 at Red Wolves Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon. It was the first conference win of the season for Cedar Ridge.
Senior Madeline Galindo-Woodring and junior Phoebe Lund each claimed two wins on the day. Galindo-Woodring had the dual match-clinching victory in the top doubles match along with her fellow senior co-Captain, Jasmin Brown. Galindo-Woodring and Brown defeated Yunah Park and Maggie Muller 8-3, which was the fifth Red Wolf victory of the day.
Earlier, Galindo-Woodring, who is an All-Big 7 Conference performer in softball, defeated Muller 6-1, 6-1 in the #3 singles match.
In the opening two weeks of the season, Cedar Ridge played defending 4A State Champion Carrboro twice to open Big 7 Conference play.
“It says a lot about this team that they can win the clutch matches,” said Cedar Ridge women’s tennis coach Noah Powers. “I talked to them before the match about coming through and executing when the match is on the line. That’s what they learned from the Carrboro matches. I’m so proud of them.”
The Bulldogs and the Red Wolves split the six singles match. DSA (0-8) evened the dual match at 3-3 after Lilla Grover defeated Cedar Ridge freshman Laura Fisher 6-3, 7-6, taking the second set tiebreaker 8-6.
In the #5 singles match, freshman Lillian Judd defeated Ivaree Eads 3-6, 6-0, 10-3 in a 10-point tiebreaker, the only three-set match of the day.
Lund won her singles match over Eleanor Smith 6-2, 6-3. Lund teamed with Bordelon to defeat Eleanor Smith and Lillian Judd 8-2, which was the first doubles match to finish
In the top singles match, Park defeated Brown 6-2, 6-0. Cedar Ridge sophomore Lydia Borelon defeated Ella Werley 6-2, 6-4.
To finish off the sweep of the doubles matches, Lucina Smylie and Eads defeated Werley and Willa Saks 8-4.
Cedar Ridge will host Triangle Math and Science Academy, based out of Apex, on Tuesday in Hillsborough.
