After a tough loss to the defending 1A State Champions, the Eno River Academy volleyball team worked its way back into the win column on Thursday night.
Sophomore Maddie Spoor finished with ten kills as the Bobcats defeated Discovery Charter School 3-0 on scores of 25-6, 25-9 and 25-7 in Hillsborough. Eno River is now 5-3 overall, 3-1 in the Triangle North Conference.
Spoor’s only other match with double-digit kills this season came against Clover Garden School on August 12 inside Bobcat Gymnasium.
Junior Johanna Jans and senior Jules Betancourt each had four kills for the Bobcats. Eno River finished 29 aces, including nine from Jans. Freshman Juliana Javins had five aces. Jayda Peoples, a sophomore setter, finished with six aces.
Junior Molly Pierce had 13 of the 22 digs credited to the Bobcats. Senior Rylee Hall recorded 13 assists, while People factored in with 12 assists.
Falls Lake Academy 3, Eno River Academy 0:
On Tuesday, the Firebirds improved to 6-1 with its second win over a team from Hillsborough in less than a week. Falls Lake Academy defeated Orange at Panther Gymnasium on August 19.
Falls Lake won on scores of 25-22, 26-24, 25-21.
Jans had nine kills for the Bobcats. Eno River had nine aces, including three from Peoples. Pierce had 19 digs. Hall and people each recorded eight assists.
Sophomore Carson Outland had five kills for Falls Lake. Senior Mackenzie Hudson and Lily Voss each had six kills for the Firebirds. Marli Seibles had eleven digs for Falls Lake.
It was the first loss in Triangle North Conference action for Eno River.
The Bobcats are currently tied with Falls Lake Academy for second place in the Triangle North. On Thursday, Vance Charter upset the Firebirds.
Eno River will return to action against River Mill Academy in a nonconference matchup inside Bobcat Gymnasium on Monday. The Bobcats will host Vance Charter on Tuesday.
Women’s Tennis: Eno River 5, Chatham Charter 4:
Despite being shorthanded, the Bobcats found a way to defeat Chatham Charter in Siler City on Thursday. Eno River was without Dahlia Kisala, their #2 singles player. It forced everyone to move up one spot, but the Bobcats still found a way to defeat the Knights for the second time this season.
It was a dual match that came down to doubles after the Knights and the Bobcats split the six singles matches. The dual match was tied at 4-4 when the Bobcats #2 doubles team of Sadie Davies-Payne and Natalie Harkins sewed up the victory with a 8-4 win over Abby Semrad and Emma Suggs. Davies-Payne and Harkins got off to a strong start, winning the opening three games. Suggs & Semrad fought back before Davies-Payne and Harkins earned the win.
The first doubles match to finish was Eno River’s #3 doubles team of Gia Morgan and Lyla York beating Chatham Charter’s Kaylee Silver-Vazquez and Lucy Kidd 8-0.
In the #1 doubles match, Maggie Moody and Stella Hampton of Chatham Charter defeated Clara Sanford and Meg Brinkman 9-7. Sanford and Brinkman dropped the first three matches, but fought back to tie the match 7-7. Brinkman had a strong match at the net.
Moody, who retired in her first match against Sanford on August 13, came back healthier on Thursday. Moody defeated Sanford 6-1, 6-3 in the #1 singles match.
At #2 singles, Davies-Payne defeated Abby Semrad 6-0, 6-1. Brinkman won her #3 singles match over Kidd 6-0, 6-1.
Two of the singles matches went to third set, 10-point tiebreakers. At #4 singles, Suggs defeated Morgan 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
At #5 singles Eno River’s Harkins defeated Stella Hamilton 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Chatham Charter earned the split in singles when Kaylee Moffitt defeated York 3-6, 4-6.
Chatham Carter is 3-3 overall.
The Bobcats bounced back from its first loss of the year at Cedar Ridge on Tuesday. They will play its Triangle North Conference opener against Henderson Collegiate on Tuesday at Fairview Park in Hillsborough. On Wednesday, the Bobcats will return to Fairview to face Clover Garden School for the second time this year. Eno River won the previous matchup over the Grizzlies 8-1 in Graham.
