The Orange volleyball team started a tough week with its second straight road win on Monday night. The Lady Panthers swept Riverside on scores of 25-5, 25-14, 25-16 at Chambers Court in Durham. Freshman Avery O’ Quinn is one of two rookie outside hitters for head coach Mary Alice Pike who have made an immediate contribution. On Monday, O’Quinn had six kills. Going into the match, O’Quinn was second on the team with 46 kills. Fellow freshman Kynlee Albert leads Orange with 52 kills. In the second set, freshman Kaleeya Fearrington had a block and two straight aces. Fearrington is the fastest woman in Orange County after having won the 100 meter dash in the Orange County Track & Field Championships last April at Chapel Hill High School. On a team full of youth, Fearrington is one of six seniors on the team. She is one of the regular rotation players returning from last year’s squad that reached the third round of the 5A State Playoffs. Orange is now 3-2. It’s two losses came against D.H. Conley, who played for the 7A State Championship last year, and Falls Lake Academy, who won the 1A State Championship last year. Orange will face Grimsley in Hillsborough on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, Orange will host mighty Carrboro for its Big 7 Conference opener.
