Bryse Wilson: An adventurous week for Wilson ended with his striking out the side against the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. On August 8, the Milwaukee Brewers designated Wilson for assignment. After he cleared waivers, Wilson was outrighted to the Nashville Sounds of the International League. Wilson opted for free agency, but was signed by Milwaukee again as a free agent on Tuesday. The flurry of activity comes as Wilson is pitching his most effective innings of the season. On Friday, Wilson struck out the side in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles defeated Milwaukee 3-1. Last Tuesday, Wilson surrendered three runs off five hits in two-plus innings as the San Diego Padres defeated Milwaukee 11-2 at Petco Park. Milwaukee maintains the best record in Major League Baseball at 76-48 as of Sunday afternoon.
Hunter Albert: A former Orange High football and baseball player, Albert has joined the North Carolina Central Eagles as a walk-on for the football team. Albert was Orange’s leading receiver with eleven receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns in 2025. He also recorded 51 tackles. The Eagles, led by head coach Trei Oliver, will open the season against Texas Southern at Thorne Stadium in Houston on August 29.
Josh Mayhew: The most successful tennis player in Cedar Ridge history, Mayhew is now at Division II Belmont Abbey College. Last spring, the Knights returned to the Conference Carolinas Tournament finals, where they fell to Mount Olive. Belmont Abbey reached the Division II Tournament, where they lost to Columbus State 4-0 in the opening round. Mayhew defeated Rafhael Gastelu of North Carolina Wesleyan 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 in a seven-point tiebreaker on February 16. He went 1-3 in singles matches last year. Also against Wesleyan, Mayhew teamed with Samuel McGregor to defeat Gastelu and Siddarth Madhavan 6-1 in doubles play. Mayhew is starting his senior year with the Knights and has spent much of this summer working out at the Orange County SportsPlex. In his sophomore season, Mayhew went 3-3 in singles action.
Katie Paulaconis: The former Cedar Ridge women’s soccer striker started her sophomore season at Division I Bellarmine on Friday. Lindenwood defeated Bellarmine 1-0 at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri. Paulaconis started for the Knights and played 34 minutes. Bellarmine will travel to Indiana on Friday.
Connor Kruse: The Lenoir-Rhyne men’s lacrosse team reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament last spring. The Bears defeated Florida Tech 15-8 in the quarterfinals at Rick Stottler Field in Melbourne, FL. Kruse, the all-time leading scorer in Orange lacrosse history, played in the game for Lenoir-Rhyne. 7th-seeded Anderson College knocked off the Bears 9-7 at Moretz Stadium in Hickory. In his sophomore season, Kruse played eight games and scored six goals with four assists. Lenoir-Rhyne finished 12-5 overall, 7-2 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Alden Cathey: In his sophomore season at Division III Arcadia University, Cathey played in 19 games, starting one. Cathey racked up 42 ground balls, including six against Eastern College. He caused 14 turnovers and was named to the Middle Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Josh Crabtree: In his sophomore season at Division III Methodist University, Crabtree played in 17 games, starting three. He scored four goals and four assists. He scored his first college goal in the season-opener against Berry University on February 7.
Josiah Tisdale: Another former Orange player who plays at Methodist University, Tisdale saw action in 13 games last season. He had seven ground balls and created three turnovers. The Monarchs finished 8-9 overall, 4-4 in the USA South Conference. After beating Greensboro College in the USA South Tournament quarterfinals, Pfeiffer ended the Monarchs season 24-3 on April 30 in Misenheimer.
Jacob Driver: A former Cedar Ridge midfielder, Driver finished his sophomore season at Division II Mt. Olive. He played in nine games and scored three goals. Driver scored twice in a 25-0 win over Driver.
Tigh Metheny: To finish his junior season at Division II Catawba, Metheny saw action in ten games, starting three. He collected seven ground balls and created two turnovers. The Indians finished 11-4 overall, 6-3 in the SAC. Anderson defeated Catawba 12-9 in the quarterfinals of the SAC Tournament.
