Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week: Danny Dyreng

This week’s Cedar Ridge Red Wolf of the Week is sophomore men’s tennis player Danny Dyreng. This season, Dyreng was the most successful player for the Cedar Ridge men’s tennis team. The Red Wolves ended the season by beating Rocky Mount 5-4 in the opening round of the 5A State Dual Team Playoffs in Nash County. The Red Wolves lost to the eventual 5A State Champions, Western Alamance. Dyreng, the younger brother of former Cedar Ridge cross country runner Naomi Dyreng, claimed two wins in the state playoff win over Rocky Mount. He defeated Seth Hall 6-0, 6-0 in the #1 singles match. In doubles, Dyreng teamed with Grady Coleman to defeat Elijah Purdy and Merlin Gardin 8-1. Dyreng faced two teams that won state championships this season. Against Carrboro, the 4A State Champion, Dyreng fought hard against the Jaguars’ top singles player, Theo Buckholtz, going three sets to a 10-point tiebreaker. Buckholtz survived 2-6, 6-1, 10-8. Dyreng defeated Eno River Academy’s Eli Edwards 3-6, 7-6, 13-11. He defeated Seaforth’s Lukas Olson 6-3, 6-0. Earlier this month, Dyreng was named to the All-Big 7 Conference team. Dyreng continues to work out in tennis during the summer as he prepares for his junior season. He opened the year beating Orange freshman Luke McCrary 6-2, 6-2 at Orange Tennis Courts.
