The Cedar Ridge softball team was just a eyelash away from earning a bye into the second round of the 5A State Playoffs
After C.B. Aycock closed out its season with eight consecutive wins, including three games in the final four days of the regular season, they inched out the Red Wolves for the coveted eight seed in the state playoffs.
That dropped Cedar Ridge to a #9 seed, which means the Red Wolves will play Wilson Fike in the opening round on Tuesday in Hillsborough.
The winner of Cedar Ridge vs. Fike will travel to Pikeville to face C.B. Aycock on Friday night.
Fike was the last team to make the field of 48 in the 5A State Tournament. The Golden Demons have lost its last four games, all via the run rule, including a 14-4 defeat against C.B. Aycock last Tuesday. Hunt ended the regular season by beating Fike 14-4 on Thursday. Hunt’s last win came on April 23, when they defeated Southern Wayne 20-10.
Cedar Ridge closed the regular season with a sweep of South Granville in Creedmoor on Thursday. The Red Wolves took the opening game 11-0 in five innings. Raegan Remaly went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the opening game with a triple. Madeline Galindo-Woodring scored three runs. Mia Best threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in five innings.
Best hit two home runs in the nightcap, which Cedar Ridge won 15-0 in three innings. Best sent a two-run blast to centerfield to score Remaly in the opening frame. She added another two-run home run in the third inning. Best also earned the win in the circle, tossing a three-hit shutout.
Rylee Capps, Arianna McGraw, Woodring and Best each hit a double.
Cedar Ridge finished the regular season 16-7 overall, 10-2 in the Big 7 Conference. It’s only league losses came against Seaforth, who went undefeated in winning the league championship.
