Amidst a difficult home slate, it took awhile for the Cedar Ridge women’s soccer team to get its first home win of the season.
The Red Wolves played four of its first five on the road back in the waning days of winter. After tough losses to Seaforth and Union Pines last week, the Red Wolves dominated J.F. Webb 7-0 for its first win inside Red Wolves Stadium on Monday night.
Junior Kate Finnegan scored four goals, the eighth hat trick of her career. In Cedar Ridge’s 7-0 win over Webb on March 25 in Oxford, Finnegan scored five goals. She also notched three goals in an 11-2 victory over Bartlett Yancey on March 10 in Yanceyville.
Finnegan leads the Red Wolves with 22 goals this season. She has 60 goals and 23 assists for her career.
Cedar Ridge improved to 6-11-1 overall, 4-4-1 in the Big 7 Conference with a road trip to Carrboro coming up on Wednesday.
Senior goalkeeper Ellamarie Perel came away with her fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Red Wolves jumped out with two goals in the opening ten minutes. In addition to Finnegan scoring the opening goal, sophomore Charlotte Darab scored two goals. It was the first multi-goal game of Darab’s career. Darab, who is on her first season on the varsity, now has five goals this year. She also scored goals against Webb, Orange and Bartlett-Yancey.
Freshman Nora Kelly added a goal for Cedar Ridge. Kelly also assisted on a goal by Finnegan. Overall, Kelly has scored six goals and four assists this season.
Ava Smith also assisted on a goal. So did junior Alex Tong.
Following the road trip to Carrboro on Wednesday, Cedar Ridge will have two home games in the final week of the regular season. The Red Wolves will host Durham School of the Arts on Monday. They will also entertain South Granville on Wednesday before traveling to Burlington to face Walter Williams on Thursday, May 7.
