After a long night on Thursday, the Orange softball team finished its business quickly on Friday. Senior Hayleigh Hammond hit her ninth home run of the season and added a triple to end the game as the Lady Panthers defeated Durham School of the Arts 16-0 in Hillsborough. Hammond drove in five runs to push her team-best total to 23. It came one night after Orange took Seaforth to nine innings in a game that lasted over two-and-a-half hours, ultimately ending with the Hawks winning 8-6 to remain in first place in the Big 7 Conference. Senior Addison Guentensberger went 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Guentensberger is winding down a career where she’s played two different sports at Orange. She has been a pitcher for the Lady Panthers and there four-plus innings against Seaforth on Thursday. Hammond leads Orange with nine home runs, a career-high. She also leads the team with 23 RBIs and has scored 28 runs. As the Lady Panthers venture into the final week of the regular season, Orange has three games on tap. They will host J.F. Webb on Tuesday, then play its final home game against Falls Lake Academy on Wednesday. Orange will travel to Seaforth on Thursday night. The Hawks are undefeated in Big 7 Conference play.
