At midseason, not only has Cedar Ridge baseball equaled its win total from all of last season.
On Monday night, the Red Wolves got its first no-hitter in seven years.
Ian McGuffey and Brody Tapper combined to retire 15 consecutive Roxboro Community School Bulldogs in a 12-0 win at Red Wolves Baseball Field. McGuffey, who earned his second win of the season, walked Roxboro Community’s Brayden Moody and Andersen White to open the game. Those were the only Bulldogs to get onboard.
McGuffey and Tapper combined to retire the subsequent 15 consecutive batters.
The last time Cedar Ridge got a no-hitter, it was in the season-opener against Oxford Prep on February 28, 2019 in Hillsborough. Phillip Berger, the grandson of current North Carolina Senate President Phil Berger, threw a five-inning no-hitter to earn the first win for then-Cedar Ridge head coach Mitchell Frazier.
McGuffey went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. McGuffey and Hudson Kelly each scored three runs as the Red Wolves improved to 10-4. Last year, Cedar Ridge finished 10-12.
McGuffey drove in the opening run with a single that rolled into left field, bringing in Kelly. McGuffey slid under a tag taking third base off an errant throw by Bulldogs’ catcher Moody. Sophomore Jesus Velazquez grounded a base hit to right field to score McGuffey.
Grant McGuffey sent Velazquez to third base with a base hit to right field. Dominic Sena drove in Grant McGuffey and Velazquez with a line drive to right field.
The Red Wolves added five runs in the second inning. Carter Warren led off with a base hit that hugged the third base line, then wound up at third base after an error in left field. Kelly delivered a two-run single to score Warren and John Grove, who reached on a walk.
Cedar Ridge will host Apex Friendship on Thursday at 6PM in Hillsborough.
