Markus Thomas has been a ubiquitous presence for Orange athletics this academic year. He was the leading rusher for the Panther football team, recording 979 yards and seven touchdowns. After rushing for 105 yards in the 5A State Playoffs against Southeast Alamance, Thomas focused on wrestling season. On December 20, Thomas won his first individual championship as a Panther when he captured the 165-pound championship at the Eagle Invitational inside the Mebane Arts and Community Center. Thomas pinned David Pugh of Randleman in 1:22 to win the title. In the semifinals, Thomas outlasted Sam Intstaine of Northern Guilford 15-4, earning a major decision. Thomas, who was the #1 seed, scored two takedowns in his opening round match against Jaden Jones of Cummings. Thomas eventually pinned Jones in 1:07. In the second round, Thomas pinned Griffin Dallesandro of Northwood in 26 seconds. This season, Thomas is 17-5. His victories helped Orange win the team championship with 176 points, beating out Southeast Alamance, which finished with 162 points. Thomas, a sophomore, has been a regular starter for head coach Spenser Poteat since his freshman year. He will continue to progress as Orange moves into 2026. Thomas and the rest of the Panthers will compete in the Quentin Crosby Invitational at Greensboro’s Dudley High School this Saturday.
