Volleyball Alumni Update: Young helps Greensboro College win USA South Conference Championship

Grace Young: The Division III Greensboro Pride won the USA South Conference championship with its 19th straight win on Saturday. The Pride defeated Averett University and Meredith College during a tri-match at Hanes Gymnasium. Young is in her second season with Greensboro after transferring from UNC Asheville. Against Meredith, Young had eleven digs as the Pride swept the Avenging Angels 25-16, 25-14, 25-19. Against Averett, another sweep, Young came away with six digs over three sets. Earlier this week, Greensboro defeated Salem 3-1 on scores of 17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 at the Salem Athletic Complex in Winston-Salem. Young delivered five aces and registered 17 digs. Greensboro won the regular season championship with three matches still remaining. They will host Southern Virginia on Wednesday.

Lottie Scully: Scully surpassed 3,000 career assists on Thursday. Playing for the Houston Cougars, Scully registered 24 assists in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to West Virginia at WVU Coliseum. Scully is now one of 27 active Division I players with 3,000 assists. The Cougars are 8-13, 1-9 in the Big 12. On Wednesday, UCF handed Houston another five-set loss at the Fertitta Center in Houston. Scully led the Cougars with 34 assists, three aces and two digs.

Cameron Lanier: Campbell swept Elon in a two-match series at Schar Center this weekend. On Halloween, Lanier tied for a team-high eight kills for the Phoenix, but the Camels swept Elon (25-20, 25-22, 25-13). On Saturday, Lanier finished with six kills and an attempted block as Campbell got another sweep (25-16, 25-16, 25-19). Lanier, who was a member of Cedar Ridge’s 2021 3A State Championship team, was in attendance for the Red Wolves win over Western Alamance in the 3rd round of the 5A State Playoffs last week. Elon is 5-18 overall, 3-9 in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Graylinn Serge: UNC Greensboro swept a match from Western Carolina at Fleming Gymnasium on Halloween. Serge played all three sets and made six digs. Serge has become a regular part of the Spartans rotation. On Saturday, the Spartans defeated Chattanooga on scores of 27-25, 25-22, 25-21. Serge finished with eleven digs. Last week, Furman defeated UNCG 3-1 at Alley Gym in Greenville, SC. Serge finished with six digs. UNC Greensboro is 14-9 overall, 7-5 in the Southern Conference.

Cameron Lloyd: Bucknell defeated Lafayette 3-1 at Lewis Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Lloyd, who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week last month, finished with 16 digs. Bucknell is 8-13 overall, 5-7 in the Patriot League. The Bison will face Lehigh on Sunday.

Addie Reid: In her sophomore year at North Carolina Central, Reid played in a loss to Delaware State last Friday. She also played in a loss to Gardner-Webb.

Anaya Carter: Division II UNC Pembroke is 12-13, 9-6 in Conference Carolinas after falling to Converse in five sets at Lumber Guaranty Bank Court on Friday. Carter played all five sets and finished with six digs. On Saturday, the Braves bounced back to defeat Erskine 25-6, 25-22, 25-6. Carter played all three sets and had three digs.

Julie Altieri: The Salisbury Sea Gulls are ranked #21 in Division III. On Saturday, the Gulls defeated #13 Lynchburg 3-0 at the Maggs Physical Activities Center for their eleventh straight win. It’s their longest winning streak in 12 years. Salisbury also defeated Mary Washington in the tri-match. Against Mary Washington, Altieri finished with 32 assists and ten digs. It was her 15th double-double of the season and the 47th of her career. She also had two kills. Against Lynchburg, Altieri missed another double-double by one dig. She finished with 35 assists and nine digs. Altieri now has 2,649 assists. She surpassed Jaime Marsocchi for fourth place on Salisbury’s all-time list. Salisbury is 3-0 in the Coast-to-Coast Conference.

Melissa Benkowitz: On Saturday, Division III Franklin & Marshall engineered a reverse sweep against Dickerson at the Mayser Center in Lancaster, PA. Benkowitz finished with 15 kills, 18 digs and two aces. On Wednesday, the Diplomats defeated Ursinus 3-0. Benkowitz led Franklin & Marshall with ten kills.

Abby Silinski: A freshman at Franklin & Marshall, Silinski was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week last month. Against Dickerson, Silinski had 17 digs with four aces. In the win over Ursinus, Silinski had eight digs with two assists. Franklin & Marshall is 19-4 overall, 7-1 in the Centennial Conference.
