Not even two years into her Orange career, Reilly Jermyn has claimed a regional cross country championship.
And it wasn’t even close.
Jermyn outran the field by 70 seconds to win the 5A Central Regional championship at the Ivey Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville. Jermyn, the Big 7 Conference champion, finished at 18:42. As was the case in the Big 7 Conference championships, a Seaforth runner finished second behind Jermyn. In the regionals, it was Chloe Freeman, who clocked in at 19:52.19.
Jermyn shaved over 80 seconds off her time compared to last year’s 3A Mideast Regionals, where she finished fourth overall at 20:05.88.
There has never been a female state cross country champion at any of the Hillsborough high schools. There have been three men who have claimed state championships, two from Orange.
The 5A State Championships will take place at the same course this Saturday.
Coming off winning the Big 7 championship, the Orange women finished 2nd in the team standings behind Cedar Ridge at regionals. In another tight race, Orange finished with 57 points, three behind Cedar Ridge’s total of 54.
Four Orange runners finished in the top 15, three of them sophomores and the other a freshman. Sophomore Ava Bishop finished 7th out of 88 runners at 20:21.22. Freshman Amatha Reddy came in 11th (20:50.87) while sophomore Kinsey Ross came in 15th (21:14.25). Another freshman, Magnolia Bolduc, came in 23rd (22:27.00). Junior Mia Blake finished 31st (22:52.42) while sophomore Jilliana Lesso finished 38th (23:19.15).
After winning the 3A Regional Championship three of the last four years, the Orange men finished 2nd in the team standings behind a runner-up finish from senior Myles Jermyn, who finished at 15:38.44. It was the second year in a row that Jermyn finished runner-up in the regionals. Eric Gillis of Jesse Carson won the regional title at 15:32.68.
In the team standings, Oak Grove High out of Winston-Salem finished first at 40 points. Orange came in second with 58 points.
Orange, the defending 3A State Champions, had three runners finish in the top five. Señior Lucas Van Mater came in fourth at 15:51.14. Grant Schmid, who won the Big 7 Conference individual championship last week at Falls Lake Park in Durham, came in fifth at 16:03.42.
Schmid’s older brother, Gabriel, won the individual state champion for Orange in 2022 and 2023 at the Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville. He will start running for N.C. State next year at the completion of his Mormon mission.
Orange freshman Jack Crandell finished 19th (17:27.47). Senior Dallas Johnson, who is a Captain for the Orange men’s soccer team while running with the cross country team this fall, finished 28th at 17:48.95. Senior Nolan Hufner came in 32nd (18:07.47) while Cameron Rios finished 73rd (20:18.59).
Orange will race for its second consecutive state championship this Saturday. The Panthers finished 2nd in 2023. Last year, they defeated North Lincoln to win the first team cross country state championship in school history when they finished with 63 points. North Lincoln finished with 96 points.
It was an Orange men’s cross country team that came away with the triple crown, winning the Central Conference Championship and the Mideast Regional championship.
