For the first time ever, the Orange men’s soccer team has defeated Carrboro. On Monday night, Ajali Carter factored in on both goals, including scoring the opening goal 32nd minute, as the Panthers defeated the Jaguars 2-1 at Jaguars Stadium. With 8:46 remaining in the first half, Carter fired in a shot from eight yards away over the head of Carrboro goalkeeper Wyatt Ferris. Senior John Gomez notched what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the second half. Gomez intercepted the opening kickoff of the second half and sent a pass to Carter. On a give-and-go, Gomez got the ball and sent a fireball from 22 yards past Ferris with 39:16 remaining in regulation. Senior Hector Garrido earned another win in net, not allowing a goal until there was two minutes remaining in the game. It’s the second year in a row that Orange has defeated Carrboro. Last year, the Panthers defeated the Jaguars for the first time since Carrboro High opened in 2007. The Panthers sit atop the Big 7 Conference with a 2-0 league record. Orange men’s soccer started in 1987 and the program has never won a conference championship. The Panthers have won four in a row and will host South Granville in Hillsborough on Wednesday night.
