Women’s golf: The Orange and Cedar Ridge women’s golf team competed in a meet at the Chapel Hill Country Club on Monday. The Lady Panthers finished fourth in the team standings. Gianna Burnette finished tied with teammate Marie Wilson for 11th in the individual standings. Each carded a 50 over nine holes. Orange’s Grace Dunlap came in 22nd with a 55, just in front of teammate Madison Edwards, who finished with a 57. Paige Gerrard came in 33rd place with a 63.
Carrboro finished first, while Chapel Hill was in second place. East Chapel Hill was third.
On September 8, Orange competed for 18 holes in two separate events in Creedmoor, hosted by South Granville High School. Wilson had the best individual score for Orange, and finished fourth overall, with a 46 over nineholds. Burnette finished with a 48. Dunlap registered a 56. Ella McCay and Edwards carded a 59.
Orange finished third in the team standings for the first nine holes.
Cedar Ridge was led by Laci Sykes, one of four Cedar Ridge players. Sykes, a softball player, finished with a 50. She finished 15th overall. Sarah Zylowski and Natalie Slagle each finished with a 58 for Cedar Ridge. Senior Victoria Matthews finished with a 59.
In the second nine holes at South Granville, Burnette finished 7th overall with a 48. Wilson finished 12th with a 51 as Orange finished fourth overall in the team standings. Sykes and Orange’s Dunlap tied for 14th with a 52. Sykes was the highest finisher for the Red Wolves. Zylowksi finished with a 56. Slagle carded a 58 for the Red Wolves. Matthews had a 59.
Orange’s Stone came in 29th with a 60. Gerrard had a 62.
Volleyball: Cedar Ridge 3, South Granville 0:
The Cedar Ridge volleyball team is officially off to the best start in team history. The Red Wolves swept South Granville in Creedmoor on scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-14 on Tuesday night.
Freshman Dani Solomon finished with nine kills to lead the Red Wolves. Claire Hargett finished with eight kills and now has 993 in her career. She will need just seven to become the second Red Wolf in school history with 1,000 kills.
Cedar Ridge started the match with five straight points, capped by an ace from senior setter Mia Marty. On the night, Marty had 16 assists and seven digs. The Red Wolves finished the opening frame with a 8-2 run. Solomon got set point with an ace.
South Granville kept the second set close in the early moments, keeping the match tied at 8-8. The Red Wolves finished the set with five straight points, including consecutive aces from Hargett. Ellamarie Perel scored off a block on set point.
Cedar Ridge took control of the third set with a 6-1 run, including two aces from senior Kayla Stoll, to take a 9-4 lead. Hargett served up consecutive aces during another 6-1 spree. Cedar Ridge scored the final five points of the match with an ace by Stoll ending the night.
Stoll’s younger sister, freshman Nora Stoll, had six digs. This is the first Red Wolf volleyball team in history to start 12-0. The 2021 3A State Championship team started 11-0 before losing a nonconference home match to D.H. Conley. The 2015 team, which played for the Eastern Regional Championship at home, lost its season-opener to Scoastee.
Women’s Tennis: Orange 7, Cedar Ridge 1
Adelyn Alvis, Molly Kruse and Kyla Mehl each won two matches as the Panthers defeated the Red Wolves to sweep the season series. With both teams without a home court due to their respective courts being resurfaced for the second year in a row, the match was played at Chapel Hill High School.
Kalynn Mason of Orange won the top singles match over Jasmine Brown 6-2, 7-5.
Madeline Galindo-Woodring won the only match for Cedar Ridge at #5 singles over Oakley Gaddy 6-3, 6-4.
Alvis won at #4 singles over Lydia Bordelon 6-2, 6-0. Orange junior Ellie Wilson defeated Terra Proctor 6-2, 6-2. Kruse won over Caroline Hall 6-0, 6-1. Later, Kruse would team with Alvis to win at #2 doubles 8-0.
Mehl, a senior, defeated Ivaree Eads 6-1, 6-2. Mehl teamed with Evelyn Gover to win the final doubles match 8-1.
Orange is 8-2 overall, 4-2 in the Big 7 Conference. They will travel to Western Alamance on Thursday.
