Melissa Benkowitz: Playing for Division III Franklin & Marshall University, Benkowitz was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Benkowitz averaged 4,61 points, 3.56 kills, 2.89 digs and one ace across nine sets last week for the Diplomats. She had a season-high six aces with eleven kills in a sweep of Keystone. Franklin & Marshall is 8-1.
Payton Wilson: Wilson lead the Pittsburgh Steelers in tackles with ten against the Seattle Seahawks at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday. Seattle defeated Pittsburgh 31-17. Wilson also had a sack as the Steelers fell to 1-1 on the season. The Seahawks piled up 117 yards on the ground, including 105 yards from Kenneth Walker III. Pittsburgh will face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA on Sunday.
Darius Satterfield:#23 Johnson C. Smith edged Elizabeth City State 21-17 at Roebuck Stadium in Elizabeth City on Saturday. Satterfield has seven punts and averaged 36.3 yards, including a long of 60 yards. Two punts were downed inside the 20-yard line and two went over 50 yards. Elizabeth City State is 0-3 and will start play in the CIAA against Fayetteville State at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex on Saturday.
Ivy Garner: Garner was honored as one of three members of the Liberty women’s soccer team before its game against #21 Kansas at Osborne Stadium in Lynchburg, VA on Sunday. The Jayhawks edged the Flames 3-2. Garner assisted on the game’s final scored, scored by Halle Engle. With the assist, Garner moved into a tie for third in Liberty program history with 20 career assists. Garner now has 68 career points, second-most in school history. Liberty 5-3-2 overall and will face Missouri State to start Conference USA play on Friday night.
Katie Paulakonis: The Bellarmine women’s soccer team remains undefeated after beating Kennesaw State 1-0 at Fifth Third Stadium in Kennesaw, GA on Thursday. Paulakonis Bellarmine is 6-0-2 and will open Atlantic Sun Conference play against Austin Peay in Clarksville, TN on Thursday.
Lottie Scully: On Sunday, the Houston Cougars volleyball team finished play in Lexington, Kentucky. The Kentucky Wildcats swept the Cougars on scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-18. Scully finished with 15 assists and seven digs. The Cougars are now 5-3. Houston returns home to the Fertitta Center for the Cougar Challenge starting on Friday. Houston will face Liberty, North Alabama and McNeese this weekend.
Graylinn Serge: The UNC Greensboro volleyball team had three five-set matches during the UNCW Invitational at Hanover Hall in Wilmington over the weekend. Serge, a former Cedar Ridge outside hitter, had four digs and one kills over four sets in a 3-2 loss to West Georgia on Saturday. UNCG is 5-4 and will face North Carolina A&T and UNC Asheville during the Battle of the Carolinas at Fleming Gymnasium this weekend.
Addie Reid: Another former Red Wolf who played on the 2021 3A State Championship team, Reid is now a sophomore at North Carolina Central. Reid had a career-high nine kills in a win over UNC Wilmington on August 30. She’s played in eleven sets over five matches so far this season. The Eagles are 2-7 overall and will travel to Radford on Monday.
Julie Altieri: The Division III Salisbury Sea Gulls defeated St. Mary’s (MD) in straight sets on scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21 at the Maggs Physical Activities Center on Wednesday night. Altieri served up 31 assists with eleven digs. It was her seventh double-double of the season. She also had two aces and three kills. Salisbury is 7-3 and will compete in the Kean Tournament in Union, NJ this weekend. They will start with a match against Alfred on Friday night.
Will Berger: A former pitcher at Cedar Ridge, Berger has started his senior year on the Wofford cross country team. Berger has also competed on the outdoor track & field team with the Terriers. Last spring, Berger finished 18th in the Southern Conference championships in the 5,000 meters and 10th in the steeplechase. Berger also competed in indoor track & field, where he competed in five meets last winter. Berger finished third in the 3,000 meters at the Samford Bulldog Invitational. Berger opened the current cross country season at the Eye Opener at Milliken Park in Spartanburg, SC. Wofford’s next meet will be at the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta on October 3.
