The Orange Middle School football team has won back-to-back Orange Person Athletic Conference championships. With a new array of starters taking the field on Wednesday, the Chargers dominated Phillips 40-8 in its season opener in Hillsborough on Wednesday afternoon. It was a huge day for running back Jameson Torain, who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 99 yards. Torain scored on the opening play from scrimmage on a 39-yard run. On the final play of the first quarter, Torain intercepted a Falcons pass. That led to Torain scoring the opening touchdown of the second quarter on a 38 yard swing pass from quarterback Beckett Kinlaw. Last year, Kinlaw started as a linebacker for the Chargers. He started his first game at quarterback on Wednesday. Kinlaw also threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kyleed Royster. On the opening kickoff, Royster recovered an onside kick, which set up Torain’s first touchdown. Jayden Gutierrez scored on a 2-point run and made several important defensive plays for the Chargers. Gutierrez also wrestles and plays lacrosse for Orange Middle. The Chargers went 9-0 last season and defeated Northern Middle to win the OPAC Championship at Auman Stadium. Next Wednesday, Orange Middle will face Smith Middle School in Hillsborough. Kickoff will be at 4:45.
