Odds and Sods: Holmes scores two goals in Orange men’s soccer win over Eastern Alamance; Wilson helps Orange tennis shut out S. Granville

Men’s Soccer: Orange 4, Eastern Alamance 0: For the second time this year, the Orange men’s soccer team got a big night from Demitrius Holmes to defeat Eastern Alamance.

Last Wednesday, Holmes scored the second brace of his career as the Panthers shutout the Eagles 4-0 in Hillsborough. On August 18, the Panthers shutout the Eagles 4-0 in Mebane. Holmes scored two goals against the Eagles in Alamance County.

Yurem Tapia Mendez, who led the Panthers in scoring last year, scored his second goal of the season. Carson Condon added a goal for the Panthers.

Goalkeeper Jordan Barbee earned his first clean sheet by making six saves in net.

Orange got assists from Emilio Hidalgo, Logan Edwards, John Gomez Tercero and Mendez.

The Panthers have defeated Eastern Alamance five straight times.

Women’s Tennis: Orange 9, South Granville 0: The Orange women’s tennis team dropped just six games in its entire match against South Granville in Creedmoor on Wednesday. It was another night where coach Justin Webb got to play eleven different players in winning all nine matches.

Sophomore Kalynn Mason won at #1 singles over Kirson Lavrack 6-0, 6-1. It was Mason’s sixth overall win of the season.

Junior Ellie Wilson defeated Emily Gonzalez 6-0, 6-0. At #3 singles, senior Casey Robinson defeated Dayana Bazan 6-1, 6-0. Senior Adelyn Alvis rolled at #4 singles over Gabby Pearce 6-0, 6-0. Senior Kyla Mehl won over Jamie Grimes 6-1, 6-0. Orange completed the sweep at singles when Evelyn Gover defeated Adalyn Knox 6-0, 6-1.

At doubles, freshman Emery Kruse and senior Oakley Gaddy defeated Lavrack and Addyson Gay 8-2. Gover, who was the only player on the night to win two matches, teamed with Samantha Gover to win at #2 doubles 8-0. Orange’s Lucy Frank and Cadence Sayed finished the night with a 8-0 win at #3 doubles.

Orange 6, J.F. Webb 0: On Monday night, the Orange tennis team continued its long road trip with a win in Oxford. The Warriors were limited to four players so there were only six matches.

Orange didn’t drop a game in any of the six matches.

The Lady Panthers had five different players earn victories. Gaddy won at #1 singles, Alvis at #2 singles, Mehl at #3 singles and Evelyn Gover at #4 singles.

Molly Kruse and Mehl won at #1 doubles while Casey Robinson and Bailey Macomson won at #2 doubles. Orange is now 6-1 overall, 3-1 in the Big Seven Conference. The Lady Panthers will travel to Seaforth on Wednesday in hopes that their new, resurfaced home court in Hillsborough will be available within the next two weeks.

Men’s cross country: Orange’s Myles Jermyn finished first in the opening Big Seven Conference meet of the season at Orange High School last Wednesday. Jermyn, who led Orange to the 3A State Championship last year, paced the pack full of strong teams with a time of 16:48. Carrboro’s Horton Benjamin finished second at 17:21.

Orange’s Grant Schmid, the younger brother of two-time 3A State Champion Gabriel Schmid, finished fourth overall at 17:48. Lucas Van Mater, who captured the individual championship in Orange’s opening race in Oxford, finished seventh.

Cedar Ridge senior John Ngunjiri was the top Red Wolf finisher at 18:28.

On Friday night, Ngunjiri participated in the Friday Night Lights event at the Ivey Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville, the longtime home of the state championships. Ngunjiri finished fourth overall among a field of 305 runners in the men’s invitational race, registering a time of 16:41.60. Gianluca Vavalle of East Chapel Hill came in first at 16:31.09.

Cedar Ridge senior Henry Alexander finished 18th overall at 17:06.89. Cedar Ridge’s Landin Tillet finished 54th, while Red Wolf senior Ryan Matthews came in 56th.

Women’s cross country: Cedar Ridge junior Ila Diaz was the top local finisher in the Girls Invitational race at the Friday Night Lights race. Diaz came in 24th with a time of 20:35.70. Sophomore Isabella Taylor-Hall finished at 20:52.00, good enough for 30th in the 237 runner field. Cedar Ridge finished 9th as a team.

Gracie Whitaker, Kate Finnegan and Ayla Henry also ran for the Red Wolves.
