Women’s Golf: Giani Burnette shot a career-best 44 for the Orange women’s golf team during a meet at Southern Alamance last week. Burnette, who had the second-best score on the team last season behind Shannon Murphy, helped Orange finish third in the overall standings.
Maria Wilson finished with a 54 for the Lady Panthers. Grace Dunlap carded a 57, while Madison Edwards had a 58. Elle McCay had a 59. It was Orange’s second meet of the season and the first since the opening day of the academic athletic year on August 14.
Women’s tennis:
Carrboro 8, Orange 1: Carrboro, which reached the 3A Eastern Regional championship match last year, easily defeated Orange in their first meeting as Big 7 Conference rivals last week in Carrboro. Orange’s Oakley Gaddy won the only match for the Lady Panthers, beating Lauren Curry 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 in a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker.
Carrboro senior Morgan Stowe won in both singles and doubles matches for the Jaguars. Stowe defeated Ellie Wilson 6-0, 6-1. In #1 doubles, Stowe teamed with Curry to defeat Kalynn Mason and Molly Kruse 8-4 in the tightest of the doubles matches.
Carrboro improved to 4-1, 2-0 in the Big 7 Conference. They already have a win over Seaforth.
Orange suffered its first loss. They fell to 4-1, 1-1 in conference action.
Cedar Ridge 8, Northwood 1:
Cedar Ridge won every match except #3 doubles in a victory over Northwood in Pittsboro on August 27 to improve to 3-2 on the season. Caroline Hall, Jasmine Brown and Terra Proctor won in both singles and doubles action for the Red Wolves.
Cedar Ridge 9, J.F. Webb 0:
On Tuesday, the Red Wolves won via forfeit for the Warriors when Webb didn’t have enough players to play.
Cross Country:
Though final results haven’t been posted yet from Orange’s opening cross country meet of the season in Oxford at J.F. Webb, the Panthers did win both individual races.
Lucas Van Mater, a senior who was a vital part of Orange’s state championship last year, capture the men’s race.
Reilly Jermyn of Orange won the women’s race.
