Darius Satterfield: The former Orange punter has been named to the preseason All-CIAA team going into his junior season at Elizabeth City State. Last year, Satterfield was fourth in the CIAA averaging 38.5 yards per punt. He had seven punts over 50 yards with 12 downed inside the 20-yard line. On 32 kickoffs, he had two touchbacks. Satterfield was named to the CIAA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2024 Fall Semester after he maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. He has also served as a representative for the National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Earlier this year, he represented the CIAA during a NCAA convention in Nashville, TN, speaking on behalf of the conference. He is the CIAA SAAC President. The Vikings are picked to finish ninth in the CIAA.
Payton Wilson: On Thursday night, Wilson returned to North Carolina as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Carolina Panthers in the preseason finale at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Wilson played two series as the Steelers defeated the Panthers 19-10. In his second year, Wilson’s role with Pittsburgh is expected to increase. The expectation around the team is Wilson will take on a three-down role as Pittsburgh prepares to face the New York Jets in its season-opener at Acrisure Stadium on September 6.
Luke Cecil: The former Orange High center played in Division III Methodist’s scrimmage against Louisburg College on Saturday. The Monarchs will face Shenandoah University in its season-opener on September 6.
Wynston Brown: Now in his second year at Methodist, Brown is a teammate of Cecil. Brown is a former quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back for Orange.
Jayden Medley: Division II Barton College will start its season against Virginia State on Thursday night at Truist Stadium in Wilson. Medley was a linebacker and All-Conference wrestler for Orange who graduated in June.
Joseph Logan: After two years with Orange, Logan is now at Division III Bluffton University in Ohio. The Beavers open its season against Kenyon University at Salzman Stadium on September 6.
Nate Sorrells: Division II Mars Hill will start its season against Winston-Salem State on September 6. They are picked to finish 5th in the South Atlantic Conference.
Jaylan Sorrells: The brother of Nate Sorrells, Jaylan is a defensive lineman with Mars Hill.
Bryse Wilson: On Wednesday, Wilson started for the Charlotte Knights of the International League against the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park. Wilson threw two innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts. The Knights defeated the Tides 6-1.
Ivy Garner: After winning its season-opener against East Carolina, the Liberty women’s soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against James Madison on August 17 at Sentara Park in Virginia Beach, VA. Garner scored her second goal in two games to tie the game in the 62nd minute. Garner also assisted on the opening goal from Avenley Monteith in the fifth minute. Liberty defeated Charlotte 1-0 at Charlotte Soccer Field last Thursday. Liberty is 2-0-1 and will face Virginia on Sunday.
Katie Paulakonis: After missing her senior season at Cedar Ridge, Paulakonis has already scored her first college goals at Division I Bellarmine University. On Saturday, Paulakonis came off the bench to score two goals as the Knights defeated Division III Asbury University 11-0 as Asbury Soccer Field in Wilmore, KY. Paulakonis scored her first college goal in the 40th minute off an assist from Aly Gorman and Makenzie Simpson. She scored her second goal in the 86th minute off a pass from Hope Broadwell. The eleven goals set a program record. Bellarmine started its season with a 2-0 win over Murray State at Frazier Stadium in Louisville, KY. In her first college game, Paulakonis played 24 minutes. In her only season at Cedar Ridge, Paulakonis scored a program record 43 goals and was named the Central Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Cedar Ridge finished 14-7-1 in 2024.
